TOLEDO SWORD DISPLAY
The Payson Historical Society is proud to announce a new display that can be seen at the Peteeneet Museum during April, May and June. Dale Barnett, the current President of People Preserving Peteetneet, has graciously consented to display his collection of swords and various pieces of ceramics that he and his wife, Gloria collected during their many travels throughout the world as part of his business.

Dale founded Payson Sheet Metal many years ago. His company is widely recognized for their work with the L. D. S. Church and their temples. His company does the TABB (Testing, Adjusting, and Balance) program in all the temples throughout the world. On his many travels to Spain, he acquired a large collection of Toledo swords.
Toledo is famous for its historical character, art and its steel. It is difficult to know the exact date when swords and knives began being made in the city. It is beyond doubt that this industry is as old as the town itself.

During the 15th, 16th and 17th Centuries craftsmen from throughout Europe came to Toledo to learn from the artisans the secret of making the blades the city was known for.
The fame of the Toledo steels was rooted in the mastery with which some artificers handled tempering without any technical knowledge of measuring, by far, the adequate temperatures for such treatment. The temperatures were known by the color of the red-hot steel and the immersion into water. People related the quality of the tempering to the water of the Tagus River in which the swords were tempered.
Dale has a collection of many swords including examples of swords used by El Sid, Richard the Lionheart, Sir Lancelot, Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, Don Quixote, Alexander the Great, Columbus, Prince Valiant, and Charlemagne among others. There is also on display a small suit of armor and a warrior mounted on his horse.
It would raise the sales tax on non-food purchases from 6.75% to 6.85%- similar to Orem. Provo and American Fork.

Q: When would the PARC program start and end?
A: The PARC program/sales usage tax isn't currently in effect. Residents have an opportunity to either pass or reject the proposal with a "Yes" or No" vote on Tuesday. November 8. If passed, it will go into effect on January 1. 2017. The program lasts for eight years and can only continue if the citizens vote to extend the program. If going into vote is difficult for residents, they can vote via absentee voting.

Q: Who decides how to spend the money?
A: If passed, allocation of funds would be recommended by an independent committee of Payson citizens and approved by the City Council.

Q: Who can apply to get money from the PARC program?
A: Any local non-pro ^organization related to Parks, Arts, Recreation and Culture can app^ to receive a portion of the PARC monies.
PETEETNEET GROUNDS BEAUTIFICATION

The time is fast approaching for the annual flower planting at the Peteetneet Museum. We would like to encourage church groups, youth groups, scouts, Payson City employees, PPP members and any other interested individuals to come and help us plant flowers and beautify our grounds for the coming summer and fall season.
The more volunteers, the less time it takes to get everything planted. The tentative date for planting will be either May 7 or 14. This date is subject to the weather and the delivery of flowers. The exact time will be made available as it gets closer. Watch the Chronicle, our Peteetneet Blogspot or you may call Ray Wilson at 801-465-4192 or Janeen Dean at the Peteetneet Museum at 801-465-5265.
Each volunteer will be provided with flowers to plant, but it is asked that each person bring their own hand tools, shovels, etc. We are encouraging groups to adopt a planter to weed and care for during the summer. We appreciate the volunteers who take time to come and assist us in this activity.Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05339230496343479222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4055559861212937429.post-8778158332295581852016-03-03T20:00:00.001-08:002016-03-03T20:00:21.553-08:00ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE EXPO

We invite you and your family to come to the Peteetneet Antique & Vintage Expo on May 14, 2016. The expo will have vendor booths from all over selling their antique, vintage, homemade crafts, and food. Don’t forget to bring that “one” item in your home that you KNOW is worth some money. The Peteetneet Antique & Vintage Expo will have nationally renowned antique appraisers on hand to give you a verbal history and value of your unique treasure; appraisal will be $5.00 per item.
All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit our beautiful Historic Peteetneet Museum & Cultural Arts Center which was established in 1901. The actual building began in 1897 as a solution to replace four, one-room schools existing at that time. In 1988, the school was restored and turned into a cultural center and museum offering plenty of ongoing activities and instruction to the community.
Each year volunteers donate almost 12,000 hours of their time to share the museum with visitors. The museum and cultural arts center hosts over 34,000 visitors each year.
Saturday, May 14, 2016
Appraisers 9:00 am – 1:00 pm (first come first served)
Museum tours and vendors 9:00am – 5:00 pm

Peteetneet Museum & Cultural Arts Center
10 North 600 East
Payson, UT.

Please call Janeen 801-358-3357 if you have any questions.Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05339230496343479222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4055559861212937429.post-28413124758170430922016-02-12T15:19:00.000-08:002016-02-12T15:19:11.936-08:00ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE APPRAISAL EXPO
The Payson Senior Citizens Annual Woodcarving Exhibit is now on display at the Peteetneet Museum. This annual exhibit has been on display during January and will continue through the month of February. The exhibit was started many years ago by Gene Colvin. He oversaw the wood carvers at the Senior Citizens Center and was also a member of the Payson Historical Society and served as a Trustee of People Preserving Peteetneet. Since the death of Mr. Colvin. Bob Dailey has worked with the carvers at the Senior Center and has graciously continued the program that Mr. Colvin established at the Peteetneet. The Peteetneet and our visitors look forward each year to see the many new carvings displayed by our local seniors. We are amazed at the talent and hard work that goes into each carving.
Don't miss the opportunity to see this outstanding display in the Peteetneet Historical Room.
REBECCA LEE PEERY ART--ARTISTS RECEPTION

The Peteetneet Arts Council is so excited to feature Rebecca Lee Perry's art
through the month of February. There will be an Artists Reception this
Friday, January 15 from 6 to 8 P.M., at the Peteetneet Museum. It's free to the
public and will be a treat to your eyes as well as your soul! Her many
talents have taken her to various parts of the world where she helped
with the murals in L.D.S. Temples. She went to Kenya with her husband
in 2006 where she took photos and painted them. These are some of her
outstanding works.

CALIFORNIA MISSION BELL

This mission bell was salvaged from one of the 21 missions established by the Franciscan Order in the late 1700s and early 1800s in early California. Most of the missions collapsed or were destroyed and a few of the original ones remained. Many have been rebuilt in recent years and their bells were recast from molds of the original bells. This bell was probably made in Spain in the late 1700s and installed in the mission after 1790.

The bell was given to Dale and Gloria Barnett many years ago by John (Dutch) Patten who had salvaged the bell. He was an uncle of Dale's. Dutch was born in Payson. He also gave the Barnetts other historical items: two oxen yokes, oxen shoes, old bridle bits, and an Indian papoose cradle.

The Barnetts decided the bell should become part of the collection of the Peteetneet Museum. It was donated to the Peteetneet along with the small bell tower to house it and the plaques that sits in front of the bell tower.

The following donated their service and/or materials for the construction:
DALE BARNETT PRESIDENT OF PEOPLE PRESERVING PETEETNEET (PPP)
THANKS FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR PETEETNEET

The People Preserving Peteetneet Executive Board and Board of Trustees would like to take this opportunity to thank our President, Dale Barnett for all that he does for the Peteetneet. He always sees what needs to be done and then he usually takes it upon himself to take care of the problem or the situation himself without bothering anyone else..
He has been involved with the new mission bell monument that has been erected on the southeast corner of the building. He donated the original California Mission Bell that an uncle gave him many years ago.
The new bell tower was erected under his direction with a number of volunteers donating their time and talents to erect the new additon. Dale had assembled the brick and stone work and a local mason donated the work to complete the base of the tower.
Dale created the metal top and the bracket for the bell. He later had a beautiful plaque made to tell the history of the bell.
Dale also had a plaque made for the new gazebo and this will be installed as soon as the weather permits.
Everything Dale does for the Peteetneet shows that love that he and his late wife, Gloria, had for this beautiful old building.
Thanks again, Dale, for all that you do. You are appreciated by everyone who volunteers their time at the museum.
Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05339230496343479222noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4055559861212937429.post-5993436129683756822015-10-02T15:38:00.001-07:002015-10-02T16:08:23.362-07:00Cross Stitch Art by Gary Duncan
CROSS STITCH ART BY GARY DUNCAN

The Peteetneet Arts Council is proud to have Gary Duncan of Manti display his Cross Stitch Art in our gallery during October and November. The art is currently on display and will be available for viewing until November 20.
Mr. Duncan has been doing this type of art for about twenty-five years. He does works of people, animals, and nature. The pieces of art look like a fine photograph when you stand back from them and when you get closer, you can see the cross stitch pattern that he has utlized.
Take a few minutes and enjoy this fantastic display of this unusual art form.Deehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05339230496343479222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4055559861212937429.post-41319650387707601932015-09-23T16:32:00.002-07:002015-09-23T16:33:21.921-07:00PETEETNEET MUSEUM HOSTS ANNUAL QUILT SHOW

SHIRLEY STEVENSON

Shirley learned to embroidery at a young age from her grandmother. She truly learned the art of beautiful handwork throughout her life and she shared this talent with many friends and family. She loved the art of quilting and piecing together quilts.
Her early accomplishments would prepare her for the beautiful quilt work she enjoyed in her later retirement years. Some of the first quilts she made were what she called her utility quilts. Those were made and shared for practical reasons. But her favorite quilting season in life came when she joined several quilt guilds and it was during this time that she became a skilled artist. Her favorites were her "Red" work quilts and scrappy quilts. She always had a project going and another two or three in line.
She truly was happiest when her hands were busy creating another quilt. With each challenge and project completed, she found satisfaction in the beautiful work she was able to accomplish. One of the most difficult things she endured in the last year of her life was to no longer be able to do her quilting and piece work. It is an honor to have her work displayed and shared with family and community. That would have brought her joy.
